Development and Local Knowledge

Development and Local Knowledge
de Gregory Forth(Ed. Routledge) Isbn : 0415318262
106.31 €
There is a revolution happening in the practice of anthropology. A new field of "indigenous knowledge" is emerging, which aims to make local voices hear and ensure that development initiatives meet the needs of indigenous people. Development and Local Knowledge focuses on two major challenges that arise in the discussion of indigenous knowledge - its proper definition and the methodologies appropriate to the exploitation of local knowledge. These concerns are addressed in a range of ethnographic contexts.

The Atlas of Chick Development

The Atlas of Chick Development
de Ruth Bellairs, Mark Osmond(Ed. Academic Press Inc) Isbn : 0120847906
86.17 €
There has not been a book like this for fifty years. In addition to many drawings and plates, the book contains discussions of general chick development and details of the research techniques used. This reference work is essential for researchers studying development and for molecular biologists and biochemists coming to the chick embryo for the first time. It is aimed at researchers, such as molecular geneticists, who wish to use the chick as their standard system, but need instruction on the...

Nomadic Desert Birds: With 63 Figures and 32 Tables

Nomadic Desert Birds: With 63 Figures and 32 Tables
de W. Richard J. Dean(Ed. Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K) Isbn : 3540403930
119.34 €
There are two basic strategies for coping with life in the desert. The first involves withstanding the extreme conditions using behavioural or physiological tactics. The second strategy is to be a migrant and to opportunistically or seasonally move to where the necessary resources are. Nomadism, i.e. the opportunistic and irregular movements from resource-poor to resource-rich patches, is a tactic that birds, with their mobility, can use, and it is explored by W.R.J. Dean in this volume. For many bird species, such movements between habitats or across landscapes to find patches of resources are essential for their continued existence. The relationship between climate, habitat and movements in the avifauna of arid and semi-arid regions and the advantages and disadvantages of a seasonally mi...

Birds of Africa: From Seabirds to Seed-Eaters

Birds of Africa: From Seabirds to Seed-Eaters
de Chris Stuart, Tilde Stuart(Ed. MIT Press) Isbn : 0262194309
28.29 €
There are numerous regional field guides but, surprisingly, few popular books on the birds of Africa. This is an excellent overview of the entire continent, with over 325 color photographs of very high quality. The Stuarts, authors of six other titles on African wildlife, also provide an engaging narrative, informally gathering Africa's birds into 12 categories--chapters such as "Raptors of Night and Day," "Aerial Feeders," and "Birds of the Oceans." Their fine book would have been even better with more introductory material--descriptions of a few of the best places to watch birds, habitat and scenic photographs, etc.--instead of the scant six pages here. Nevertheless, this book is a pleasure to read and a feast for the eyes. Highly recommended.-Henry T. Armistead, Free Lib. of Philadelphi...

Hummingbirds: A Celebration of Nature's Most Dazzling Creatures

Hummingbirds: A Celebration of Nature's Most Dazzling Creatures
de Ben Sonder(Ed. Courage Books,U.S.) Isbn : 0762404205
12.33 €
There are more than 300 species of hummingbirds in the Western Hemisphere, 15 of which can be found in North America. These diminutive, exotic birds are shown here in 100 resplendent color photographs depicting them in their natural surroundings: feeding on nectar from flowers, feeding their young, sitting on eggs in a nest, taking a bath, preening themselves, and flying. One close-up photo shows a newly hatched chick, blind and without feathers, next to the egg of its sibling. Another shows a hummingbird's feathers magnified many times. Sonder's interesting text focuses on the bird's history (they were part of Native American culture, Mayan legend, and Aztec civilization); physical characteristics, patterns, and colors; aerial acrobatics (they can mate on the wing, hover in the air, and f...

Hosting the Birds: How to Attract Birds to Nest in Your Yard

Hosting the Birds: How to Attract Birds to Nest in Your Yard
de Jan Mahnken(Ed. Storey Books) Isbn : 0882665251
10.4 €
There are many good books on attracting birds, such as Stephen W. Kress's Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds ( LJ 2/1/86). This is not one. It is a miscellany of information on wild birds available with greater detail and authority in many other sources, such as Paul R. Ehrlich's Birder's Handbook: A Field Guide to the Natural History of North American Birds (S. S., 1988). Mahnken's title and subtitle are misleading; little of his book concerns attracting birds. It would be a miracle if some of the birds described here (e.g., the bald eagle) frequented any reader's yard. The bibliography is a curious hodge podge of inappropriate titles with some good books. Not recommended.- Henry T. Armistead, Thomas Jefferson Univ. Lib., PhiladelphiaCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

de Jim Burns(Ed. Willow Creek Press) Isbn : 1572236825

There are 19 species of owls in North America and a spectacularly-illustrated chapter is devoted to each in this intriguing natural history narrative. Author Jim Burns takes the reader on a journey of discovering owls during his travels across the United States. His two rules of owling-that owls never appear when and where they are expected, and that owls always appear when and where they are least expected-set the tone for this informative and exciting excursion into the world of owls. The essays are combined with stunning full-color images of these elusive birds, and as these birds are so often heard and not seen, an audio CD is part of this complete owl package, showcasing the magnificent calls of these beautiful and mysterious birds. Birds of the Yukon Territory
de Pamela H. Sinclair(Ed. University of British Columbia Press) Isbn : 0774810122

The Yukon is a land of remarkable wilderness, diverse ecosystems, and profound beauty. It is also home to a unique assemblage of birds. As of 2002, 288 bird species have been documented in the Yukon, with 223 occurring regularly. They occupy an amazing range of habitats, from the most barren mountain peaks to lush valley bottom forests, and are an integral part of the cultural heritage of Yukon First Nations people. The vast areas of natural habitat with limited road access can make the study of birds challenging, but are key in defining the nature of birding in the Yukon.Birds of the Yukon Territory is the result of a decade-long project initiated to gather and share what is known about the Yukon's birdlife. Lavishly illustrated with 600 colour photographs and 223 hand-drawn bird illustra...
