Naturalist Dunning ( The Loon: Voice of the Wilderness , Yankee Bks., 1985) here presents a series of well-crafted essays on birds' nests. There are chapters on eggs, natural selection and the nest, ground nests, platform nests, burrow nests, cavity nests, cup nests, and pendulous nests. A combination of personal observation, science, and sentimentality, this is good reading enhanced by Dunning's own abundant artwork. However, there are many good books on birds' nests already, including several excellent field guides. What does this one add? Not a great deal, yet the author's experiences and observations are unique. The nest book genre could use more books like this for general consumption. Recommended accordingly.- Henry T.
