Secrets of the Nest: The Family Life of North American Birds

Secrets of the Nest: The Family Life of North American Birds
de Joan Dunning(Ed. Houghton Mifflin (Trade)) Isbn : 039562035X
26.12 €
Naturalist Dunning ( The Loon: Voice of the Wilderness , Yankee Bks., 1985) here presents a series of well-crafted essays on birds' nests. There are chapters on eggs, natural selection and the nest, ground nests, platform nests, burrow nests, cavity nests, cup nests, and pendulous nests. A combination of personal observation, science, and sentimentality, this is good reading enhanced by Dunning's own abundant artwork. However, there are many good books on birds' nests already, including several excellent field guides. What does this one add? Not a great deal, yet the author's experiences and observations are unique. The nest book genre could use more books like this for general consumption. Recommended accordingly.- Henry T. Stellar Magnetism

Stellar Magnetism
de Leon Mestel(Ed. OUP Oxford) Isbn : 0198517610
183.1 €
Most stars appear to show some degree of magnetic activity. Varying magnetic fields show up in the familiar sun-spot cycle and in similar activity in other cool stars. Many hot stars carry steady magnetic fields stronger than the average solar field and are well described as oblique rotators. A similar model is applicable to the rapidly rotating, enormously dense neutron stars with their far stronger fields, observed as radio and X-ray pulsars. Galactic magnetic fields may play a crucial role in star formation, and in the spectacular behaviour in galactic nuclei. Cosmical magnetism in general is a rapidly developing field, and this book has grown out of the lifelong work of an outstanding researcher in the area. An authoritative account with broad astronomical scope, its thorough, careful ...

Build a Better Birdhouse (Or Feeder): New Designs in Avian Architecture

Build a Better Birdhouse (Or Feeder): New Designs in Avian Architecture
de Malcolm Wells(Ed. Willow Creek Press) Isbn : 1572230495
9.46 €
Most birdhouses, according to«underground architect»Malcolm Wells, are«silly-looking boxes embarrassing us out of doors. We owe it to the Creator of the birds, if not the birds themselves, to give it our very best shot ; to say, somehow, in human terms, what they say so movingly in grass and twigs and straw.»The author has been giving it his best shot for over 40 years, creating little habitats of weathered wood that belong to and blend elegantly with the landscape. The 25 easy-to-follow designs presented here (with the author's humorous and philosophical asides) will make both birds and people happy.
