Title: Newts and Salamanders of Europe Poyser Natural His
de Richard A. Griffiths(Ed. ) Isbn : 012303955X
106.04 €
Nearly thirty years after the publication of the last detailed book on the newts and salamanders of Europe, this book at last provides a much needed, modern coverage of the ecology, behavior, evolution, and conservation of these fascinating amphibians. The author abandons the popular conception of amphibians as a primitive group poorly adapted to life on land. Indeed, he shows how the diversity of newt and salamanders life-styles underlines how this relatively small group of animals have survived in such diverse habitats as underground caves, mountain tops, tropical forests, and the Siberian tundra. Delightfully illustrated and fully referenced throughout, the book synthesizes much recent research into a lively and readable format that will be of interest to both experienced and inexperien...

Mallards

Mallards
de Scott Nielsen(Ed. Voyageur Pr) Isbn : 0896582388
33.26 €
Nearly everybody recognizes mallards, the most common and widespread waterfowl species in North America, with six million breeding pairs (down by 25% over a 30-year period). Nielsen ( A Season with Eagles ) spent 15 years observing and filming these ducks at his home in northwestern Wisconsin. His magnificent photographic essay captures them at every stage in their development, from nesting to migration. The brief text describes mallard life history and behavior patterns. We learn that ducklings leave the nest within a day of hatching and make their first flight at eight weeks (six in the Arctic). Nielsen examines future problems for the mallard: drought, contaminated water and crowding pose ongoing threats to successful breeding even for a notably versatile and adaptable species. Visually...

Birds of Voyageurs National Park: A Guide to the Minnesota-Ontario Border Country

Birds of Voyageurs National Park: A Guide to the Minnesota-Ontario Border Country
de TBA(Ed. University of Minnesota Press) Isbn : 0816638993

Nature/Regional An essential guide to bird identification in this wilderness region. Voyageurs National Park, on the Minnesota-Ontario border, is beloved by campers, canoeists, kayakers, hikers, and especially, bird-watchers. Its solitude offers a relatively undisturbed habitat, and its unusually varied ecosystem-the open water of large lakes, wetlands, and upland forests-provides a unique home for its bird population. Indeed, Voyageurs encompasses some of the greatest diversity of bird life in North America with over one hundred species known to breed within the park and even more nonbreeding visitors. This book describes one hundred of Voyageurs' most commonly seen birds-from the familiar Common Loon to more unusual species such as the Black-Backed Three-Toed Woodpecker and the Mourning ...

Birds and Other Wildlife of South Central Texas: A Handbook

Birds and Other Wildlife of South Central Texas: A Handbook
de Edward A. Kutac, S. Christopher Caran(Ed. University of Texas Press) Isbn : 0292743157
23.76 €
Nature takes a surprising turn in the heart of Texas. The flat Gulf Coastal Plains, which become the fertile Blackland Prairies in Central Texas, end abruptly at the Balcones Escarpment, one of the state's most dramatic geological features, and the rolling, more sparsely vegetated Hill Country begins. The animal life varies as dramatically as the land. More than 400 species of birds alone, nearly three-fourths of all Texas birds, can be spotted in the region. This handbook offers a concise natural history of Central Texas and a complete checklist of all native and naturalized vertebrate animals, including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, as well as invertebrates that include butterflies and land snails. The listings cite both scientific and common names for each species, rel...

Shadowbirds: A Quest for Rails

Shadowbirds: A Quest for Rails
de William H. Burt(Ed. The Lyons Press) Isbn : 1558212930
23.76 €
Nature photographer Burt writes hauntingly and evocatively of his search for two species of secretive marsh birds: black rails and yellow rails. Reluctant ever to fly and largely nocturnal, these cryptic, almost mythical birds skulk through marsh grass unseen. Fortunately for Burt, they do call vigorously in the breeding season, and his exquisite color photos of the birds he has been able to find are legendary among birders. He takes the reader to Chesapeake Bay marshes to find black rails and their nests and to Manitoba, North Dakota, and other prairie regions for yellows. Much of the yellow rail segment concerns his search for and miraculous relocation, 90 years later, of haunts visited by a kindred spirit, a Rev. P.B. Peabody. Full of musings, philosophy, and lyric descriptions of the r...

Secrets of the Nest: The Family Life of North American Birds

Secrets of the Nest: The Family Life of North American Birds
de Joan Dunning(Ed. Houghton Mifflin (Trade)) Isbn : 0395718201
17.06 €
Naturalist Dunning ( The Loon: Voice of the Wilderness , Yankee Bks., 1985) here presents a series of well-crafted essays on birds' nests. There are chapters on eggs, natural selection and the nest, ground nests, platform nests, burrow nests, cavity nests, cup nests, and pendulous nests. A combination of personal observation, science, and sentimentality, this is good reading enhanced by Dunning's own abundant artwork. However, there are many good books on birds' nests already, including several excellent field guides. What does this one add? Not a great deal, yet the author's experiences and observations are unique. The nest book genre could use more books like this for general consumption. Recommended accordingly.- Henry T. Armistead, Thomas Jefferson Univ. Lib., PhiladelphiaCopyright 199...
