10 Things I Know Abt Penguins

10 Things I Know Abt Penguins
de CALICO BOOKS(Ed. McGraw-Hill Contemporary) Isbn : 0809243490

PreSchool-- Within these titles is a wealth of very brief trivia illustrated with cartoons and full-color photographs. Readers are given a fact or two per two-page spread. The statements are straightforward, and the illustrations are clear and appropriate to the text. Unfortunately, the audience for these books will be extremely limited. While children might be interested in some of the information, it won't satisfy their curiosity. They're likely to ask why or how or when after hearing each statement, thereby making the books a rather frustrating experience for both parent and child. Books in the "New True Series" (Childrens) are better choices. --J. J. Duck

Duck
de David Lloyd(Ed. Random House Inc) Isbn : 039486669X
1.86 €
PreS The narrator recalls a time ``long ago'' when a toddler named Tim called all animals ``duck'' and all vehicles ``truck.'' His Granny graciously corrected him with the appropriate nomenclature as she showed him the real things and rewarded him with a kiss after he correctly said ``duck'' or ``truck.'' Then, in an awkward part of the book, Tim doesn't say a word as he examines his toy train and truck. And to prove he has assimilated this naming process, he calls out ``duck'' when he sees a real one at the pond, and he kisses Granny back after she kisses him. The book looks inviting, but the text is repetitive and tedious. The simple, delicate muted drawings of popular objects (dogs, cats, toys) will invite younger children to explore the pages. They bear that light, familiar, Burningham...

The Takahe: Fifty Years of Conservation Management and Research

The Takahe: Fifty Years of Conservation Management and Research
de William G. Lee, Ian G. Jamieson(Ed. Otago University Press) Isbn : 1877276014
19.12 €
Polynesian settlement of the islands of New Zealand about 1,000 years ago and large-scale European colonization in the 19th century caused massive environmental changes for indigenous animals. Fifty-five species of endemic birds, or 41 percent of land and freshwater species, were lost. In response to these extinctions and the marked population decline of many species, national government agencies supported conservation initiatives throughout the 20th century. For more than fifty years attempts to conserve the takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) a large, flightless, herbivorous bird have pioneered techniques for protected natural management, habitat manipulation, captive rearing, wild releases, and island translocations. The takahe is well known in New Zealand as a bird thought for several deca...

Twenty-six full color plates and some part plates depict all the species and distinct subspecies in different plumages. To help further with identification, the book includes nearly 250 color photographs, numerous line drawings, and color distribution maps for each species. The detailed species accounts cover all aspects of identification: taxonomy, size and structure, plu...
